Native and intravenous contrast CT scan of entire abdomen and pelvis

MacroKlinika
Miskolc

CT is an imaging diagnostic procedure that produces a series of cross-sectional images of the examined body areas using X-ray. Compared to traditional X-ray scans, the advantage of CT is that it gives a more detailed picture of the internal structures, contributing to an accurate diagnosis.

The Examination

During the procedure, you will be alone in the examination room with the assistant controlling the process from the outside while monitoring it through a window. For the scan, you will be laying on a table that is part of the equipment and moves slowly through the circular gantry. The assistant will ask you via microphone to remain still and hold your breath when capturing the images.Following completion of the first series, intravenous contrast medium will be administered via a flexible venous cannula. The operation of the device produces a loud roar.

Depending on the health problem being examined, CT imaging may be performed with or without the administration of intravenous contrast media. For the service detailed herein, first series of so-called native scans is taken, followed by a second series of images taken after the intravenous administration of the contrast agent. The intravenous contrast media is used to make blood vessels visible on the images.

The examination is recommended in case of the following symptoms, complaints

  • inflammatory or infectious diseases of the internal organs
  • kidney stones
  • tumors
  • injuries caused by trauma

The examination is not recommended in the following cases

Although the equipment has been designed to minimize adverse effects, the body is exposed to a small amount of radiation during a CT scan. Therefore, it is important to weigh the possible health risks and benefits before undergoing a CT exam. For children and pregnant women, CT scans are usually performed only in the most justified cases.

Good To Know

Opening Hours: Monday – Friday: 8:00 - 20:00 Saturday: 8:00 - 14:00 Referrals for a CT scan can only be made by a specialist upon previous examination of the patient. Please come with an empty stomach, which means that you should avoid consuming solid foods or carbonated drinks in the 5 hours prior to your appointment. For the exam, the stomach and intestines need to be filled with liquid. Therefore, you will be asked to drink half a liter of a solution containing iodine contrast agent about an hour and a half before the scan. The contrast agent can cause side effects, which are usually mild and effectively manageable with the medicines available at the clinic. Please inform the Clinic beforehand if you are taking any diabetes medication. Prior to the exam, any metal jewelry, accessories or medical devices (e.g. hearing aids, dentures) containing metal should be removed from the test area. The examination takes about 30 minutes and does not cause pain or discomfort for the patient. Officially, the delivery of the medical records can take up to 72 hours.
