Head MRI (native and contrast enhanced)

Medical Point - Budapest XIII.

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is currently among the most advanced diagnostic methods in the clinical practice, which uses a powerful magnetic field, radio waves and a computer to produce complex and detailed pictures of the body's internal anatomical structures. MRI is a non-invasive procedure that can be the right option for patients for whom CT is contraindicated due to the resulting radiation exposure. MRI is particularly suitable for the examination of soft tissues.

THE EXAMINATION

First a series of so called native images is captured without contrast media. At the next step, a syringe-like injector is used to administer contrast agent, and a second series of images is taken. For taking the scan, you will need to lay still on a table that is part of the MRI machine while it moves slowly through the large tube-like scanner. Several pictures of your head will be taken as the table slides into the machine. The MRI scanner will make a loud banging noise during the procedure. You may use earplugs to block the noise. There is a microphone and speaker built into the equipment that allows you to communicate with the staff. During the procedure, you will be alone in the examination room with the assistant controlling the process from the outside while monitoring it through a window. The scan takes approximately 60 minutes.

The examination is recommended in case of the following symptoms or complaints

  • aneurysms
  • epileptic convulsions
  • multiple sclerosis
  • spinal cord injuries
  • hydrocephalus, a buildup of spinal fluid in the brain cavities
  • stroke
  • infections
  • tumors
  • cysts
  • hormonal disorders (e.g. acromegaly and Cushing’s syndrome)
  • hemorrhage
  • issues due to a previous head injury
  • developmental anomalies
  • dizziness or vertigo
  • seizures or chronic headaches

The examination is not recommended in the following cases

Please inform the medical staff if you are pregnant. The MRI’s magnetic field may affect unborn children. Please make sure to inform the medical staff about any devices inside your body that may contain metal, such as implants, prostheses, pacemakers, bone screws or pins, etc.

Good To Know

The doctor is available for appointments on the following days: Monday: 10:00-18:00 Tuesday: 9:00-18:00 Wednesday: 10:00-17:00 Thursday: 10:00-15:00 Friday: 9:00–170:00 Please do not consume any food in within 6 hours prior to your appointment as it may cause interference with the contrast agent. Caused by the intravenous contrast media, a very rare condition is nephropathy, renal failure, which could occur a few days after the examination. In order to avoid kidney disfuncion, blood tests for GFR are performed on site prior to MRI. The examination will not cause any pain or discomfort. If you have claustrophobia or anxiety, you may want to ask the staff for a mild sedative prior to the exam. You may be asked to wear a hospital gown or clothing that doesn’t contain metal fasteners. You can’t bring electronic devices into the MRI room. The magnetic field generated by the MRI machine attracts metal objects. To avoid injuries, any metal jewelry, accessories or medical devices containing metal (e.g. hearing aids, dentures) should be removed and left at the changing room. The radiologist will evaluate the images and issue a written report within 24 hours after the procedure. You will be informed on the spot about the time you can pick up the medical records. Upon request, the medical records will be sent to the email address you may have provided in the consent form.
