Blood tumor marker screening for women
When it comes to cancer, the importance of early detection cannot be emphasized enough. While cancers discovered at an early stage generally have better prospects, as the disease progresses, the chances for an effective treatment gradually decrease. Malignant cells hiding in our bodies may be detectable through their metabolism that causes characteristic shifts in the levels of certain molecules present in our blood or urine. Therefore, in addition to imaging procedures, cancer screening from body fluids also plays an important role in the early diagnosis of the disease.
Due to the peculiarities of the female body, certain tumors are specific to women. These include cancers affecting the female gonads (such as the uterus and the ovaries) or the breasts (breast tumors are more frequent in women). This comprehensive screening includes the detection of marker molecules specific to some gynecological tumors:
- Comprehensive blood analysis
- CEA (carcinoembryonic antigen) - gastrointestinal tumors
- AFP (alpha-fetoprotein) - liver and germ cell tumors
- CA 15-3 (cancer antigen 15-3) - breast cancer
- CA 125 (cancer antigen 125) - ovarian cancer
- NSE (neurospecific enolase) - small cell lung cancer
During the test, they take approx. 20-200 ml of blood. Urine should be collected in a clean container (available at the pharmacy); the middle radius of the first urine of the morning is suitable for the examination; try not to urinate from 2 AM the night before sampling.
