Thyroid ultrasound

Thyroid ultrasound is a routine test, used to asses the size of the thyroid gland, inflammatory conditions and diseases. Proper hormone management plays an important role in maintaining the internal balance of our body. On our neck, the thyroid, sorrounding the trachea, determines the metabolism of our entire body. An under or overactive thyroid gland causes endocrinological problems that can have a serious impact on our well-being and health.

During the procedure, the patient will be lying on the examination bed. The doctor will apply a translucent, colorless and odorless gel to the test area, which is then scanned through the head of the ultrasound device. Ultrasound examination also reveals the presence of nodules or cysts in the thyroid gland and gives an idea of their size, location and structure. Because some lesions may spread over time to nearby lymph nodes, the doctor will also check the surrounding areas for enlarged lymph nodes.

The examination is recommended in case of the following symptoms or complaints

Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland):

  • frequent fatigue
  • dry skin
  • weight gain
  • muscle weakness and pain
  • joint pain
  • depression
  • decreased libido
  • increased sensitivity to cold
  • low heart rate
  • constipation
  • infertility
  • swelling under the Adam's cavity

Hyperthyroidism (thyroid overactivity):

  • increased appetite
  • accelerated heartbeat
  • irritability
  • diarrhea
  • anxiety
  • difficulty sleeping
  • unjustified weight loss
  • swelling of the thyroid gland

The ultrasound examination does not require any special preparation. It is painless and harmless and  can be repeated as frequently as needed.
